The NDC Codes are actually just a large database maintained by our government. The Items in the database cover most over the counter agents (drugs), insulin and Prescription drug products as well as herbal drugs that are distributed in the United States.

The NDC Codes came into existence through Medicare because they needed a way to keep track of their out patient drug reimbursement program. At this time the application of the NDC Codes is widespread beyond Medicare’s use

The Actual Alpha Numerical Code used by the NDC system is an 11 digit number made up of 3 sections.

Vendor Identification – could also be distributor.

Generic Entity, Strength and Dosage Information.

Package Code indicates the package size.

One of he real reasons for the NDC is to reduce confusion regarding their various drugs on the market today. It has even lead to implementing a bar code system to assist in keeping track of the information.

[ad]

In order for a Drug to be added to the NDC Codes Database the Drug Manufacturer must communicate with the FDA, keep in mind it is the Drug Manufacturer’s responsibility to do so. Once the Drug has been listed with the FDA then it’s information must be updated in June or December yearly or sooner if more information on the Drug becomes available.
